This lovely item is what watchmakers traditionally used to determine if a watch was magnetized. The needle is jewelled and rides on a hardened steel point. The case is chromium plated brass and 13 millimeter in diameter. Simply open the lid of the box and wave the watch over the compass. When a watch is magnetized, one end of the compass needle is attracted, the other repelled. When the needle is attracted at both ends, there watch is not magnetized. Who needs this little item? Anyone with a good watch, a sense of the charm of tradition, and 37 bucks to spend on a frill.

This is a very useful tool for removing screws that have broken off in a plate or bridge. The broken shaft of the screw is gripped from above and below (if possible) and turned out of the part. Supplied with 1 and 0.8 mm tips (two each), 0.4 through 0.7 tips are also available. Every serious watchmaker is going to break off a screw one day and should have this important tool.

This boxed set of beautifully made brass winders is an extravagance, but a useful one for the serious watch maker. For right-hand mainsprings, arbors and drums are provided for all barrel sizes 00 through 15. This provides correct sizes for everything from very small women's calibers to large pocket watches. Once the mainspring is wound into the winder, it may be ejected into the barrel with a push of the plunger on the top of the winder. The mainspring may be perfectly wound and inserted in the barrel entirely without touching it.

This beautifully made balance poising tool is the classic approach to poising balances: the balance staff is set across a pair of razor-edge ruby jaws and the balance is adjusted until there is no "low" spot. The tool is adjustable for different staff lengths and includes a bubble level for leveling of the tool. I occassionally use mine, but even if you never poise a balance, this tool might be worth the price for the beauty and craft alone.
